CHINA REPORT SPRING 2001—A VISIT WITH THE UNDERGROUND

                                                  CHURCH NOW 110 MILLION STRONG

 

Praise the Lord forever.  Your gift of encouragement opens a new dimension of Jesus love to them.

 

The Lord has added to our focus in China.  Originally, with a heart full of compassion, we looked to meet the needs of the underground house churches that were in distress as Paul did for the Jerusalem church when they were in famine.  We looked for the persecuted that were homeless; families whose fathers were in prison; families of the martyred; widows in need and leaders on the run.  Because of your generosity, we are now able to meet these needs that the Lord brings our way and to do even more.  We find the Lord making us aware of the need to equip the saints for works of service, Ephesians 4:11-15.  If Paul could only see us now.  On second thought, I believe he can.  For those of you that want to contribute to winning the lost for Christ and discipling them, I am sure you will be pleased about this expansion.

REGION #1

 

If you recall our last trip to China, for about one week, we rode the Chinese torture bus and followed the Marco Polo Silk Road.  We came to spread the joy of Jesus to many and especially to those local co-workers that accompanied us on the bus.  The ex Muslims who accompanied us are now turning that area upside down for the Lord.  Big John tells us that they had zeal before but now they have power and zeal.  Our example of being fearless and led by the Holy Spirit has found fertile ground in them and is being multiplied.  There are now 15 co-workers among the Muslims.

 

FIRE AMONG THE MUSLIM CONVERTS

 

Our bus driver Mark received the Lord Jesus as his Savior on that journey.  He is spreading the Gospel without fear.  He says, “God is over everything, why do you fear anything?”  Peter’s disciples spread out and went to their kinsmen and preached the Gospel to them.  This year Peter is staying put and many are coming to him to be discipled.  One brother who had an attack of kidney stones was prayed for and was healed.  He passed the large stones and now has them in a bag to show as he witnesses of the Lord’s healing.

 

MARTYRED STEPHEN’S CHURCHES ARE PROSPERING

 

The churches that our martyred brother Stephen started are becoming a sweet fragrance to the Lord, says Big John.  You would think that his death would have put the church into fear and hiding.  Well, it did for a while until we delivered your offerings to them.  We did not have to give them a heavy teaching on giving.  The churches saw the Lord bring offerings from the Free Church half way around the world to Stephen’s widow and family. They in turn started to imitate the example and to collect out of their poverty as the Macedonia churches did for Paul.  So my friends, those of you who have given, your gift continues to grow and influence the church in China.  Stephen’s martyrdom has been the fertile ground and the war cry to win the lost to the true God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 

 

LEADERS ON THE RUN--HUNTERS

 

When we meet with the leaders, I always ask, “How many leaders do you know are on the run from the authorities?”  I give them money for each one.  The Lord tells us to flee if you know the authorities are coming to persecute you.  The challenge is to find those on the run.  It is no easy task.  Big John is the best at this.  He is like a gifted secret agent tracking down the leaders on the run and he doesn’t stop until he finds them. 

 

For example; Matthew, one of the leaders that met us, told this story.  He and his wife were arrested, beaten and put in prison.  They were released from prison and got word that the police were looking for them again.  They had to leave everything and run to another city.  They were exhausted and ran out of money.  Big John found them just before despair set in and blessed them with your offering.  Matthew asked many times, who gave you this money for us?  To protect us, Big John would not reveal the source of the gift.  On this trip, I met Matthew, his wife and their 6-month-old daughter named Kindness and it was revealed to them that it came from the Free Church.

 

REGION #5

 

AN AREA OF MUTUAL RESPECT

 

Not all the authorities in China are hostile towards Christians.  The hostility varies from place to place.  Some city officials do not follow the government’s destructive policy towards the underground church.  In such an area, we assisted in the completion of a training center.  Please pray the Lord’s blessing on these government officials that are allowing this training center to equip the saints.  The reason they do this is because of the generous assistance the Christians give to their community.  Perhaps, there is a lesson here for the Free Church.

 

STUDENT EVANGELISTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS

 

They now have 40 students who are instructed for one month and then sent into the field for the next month.  They do this for two years.  These students are equipped with the true Gospel and are more able to meet the challenges ahead.  Most of them come from the countryside with no means of support but with a heart full of desire to win the lost for their new Savior, Jesus.  The training center must feed them and give them transportation money so they can get to their assigned outpost.  Until now, this lack of funding has burdened them.  We have helped them with scholarships for the students and the ‘sent out missionaries’ from this network.        

 

NORTH KOREANS FIND SANCTUARY IN CHINA

 

Very few places in the world treat our Christian brothers and sisters more brutally than in North Korea.  Even China is more humane than North Korea.  The martyrdom rate is extremely high for those Christians that fall into the hands of the police or go to prison. 

 

More details are emerging of the brutal treatment of Christians in labor camps.  Inmates are beaten, sexually abused, starved, tortured and even killed in the "pits of degradation [and] misery," said Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW).  One former prisoner told of how Christians were treated the worst of all prisoners, in an effort to make them recant their faith.

 

In an iron-smelting factory, a guard was trying to force eight Christians to recant their faith. "When they failed to respond, he ordered them to kneel before him and had molten iron poured over them. The metal went through their bodies, which shriveled into nothing."  Jesus quickly received their spirit.

 

I was told of another problem that needs our prayers.  The underground Christians that cross over the border into China from North Korea have gotten used to the government taking care of them even if it is with just a meager distribution of food.  They don’t realize that when the Chinese churches assist them, it is out of poverty and with great risk.  This kindness and hospitality is taken for granted, as if it is due them.  Somehow, they must be instructed to be thankful and gracious for the sacrifice of their Chinese brothers.

 

REGION #4

 

BULLDOZER LEAVES 40 SENIORS HOMELESS

 

 

The main reason for my making this emergency trip to China was because of the bulldozing of homes used as house churches.  Our information was incomplete as to where this was taking place, so I went on faith to find them.  Well, the Holy Spirit sent a leader to us that belongs to the fellowship where it took place.  This particular house church network built a new house for 40 Christian seniors that wanted to be together to worship the Lord.  They registered the facility with the authorities, as you are required to do for senior housing.

 

The authorities found out the seniors were worshiping the Lord and they were told to stop.  They refused and the authorities bulldozed the house with all their belongings in it.  This outraged the townspeople against the authorities for their treatment of the seniors.  Thirty-five of them have found shelter with their relatives and 5 are still homeless.  These seniors have determined to stay together, and to find a home again where they can worship the Lord.  If the Lord Jesus was there in person, He would say, “I have not found such great faith in all of China.” 

 

Based on the faith of the seniors, the plan is to sell the land of the destroyed house, rebuild on a new site and not register it with the authorities.  It is their opinion that the authorities would not dare do this again.  I knew this was where your offerings were to go.  I sent this leader home with a sizable gift that will encourage them to continue the project until completed.

 

IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED TRY & TRY AGAIN

 

This same fellowship is tired of the police searching their homes and having their printers, scanners and literature confiscated by the police.  They use this equipment to print teachings for the body of Christ.  They would like to start a copy business and print for the Lord after hours.  You have now invested in printing the Gospel in China.  You have to feel good about that.

 

The police in this area started to fine Christians and then turn them loose only to arrest them later and fine them again.  It wasn’t long before the believers figured out what they were doing.  The believers agreed to stop paying any fines after being arrested.  The will go to prison rather than pay a fine.  Since then, arrests have declined dramatically.

 

MATTHEW & PRICILLA’S TORTURE - A TESTIMONY

 

When I was in college, my major was philosophy, which included the study of the Bible.  I compared each religion from a scholar’s judgment.  Then an old guard at the campus gate preached the good news to me and I was curious and want to know more.  After that, I attended many activities that was organized by churches and it seems like I have accepted Jesus but actually I just have the “Christian” name.  I was not a true Christian as my belief was “we should do everything with our hard work.  Just rely on ourselves”. 

 

I did have a successful life after graduation, a high salary, received honor from others, and then I became a businessman and made a lot of money.  However, neither the money nor the honor gave me peace.  My father is an administrative officer, so he wants me to become a government official.  I entered his company and shortly after I was promoted to a high position.

 

However, one day, a great change happened in my life, because of the businessman’s cunning I was cheated by the others and all that I have was lost.  All that I used my whole life to pursue were gone in one moment like it was a drama or a trick.  I felt so disappointed that I can’t help thinking about the meaning of one’s life, so quickly I have past 30 years and after the next 30 years I will be 60 years old, that is to say, my life is near to the end and fame and gain gives me nothing.  What is the meaning of life?  I thought and thought, even lost the hope and confidence to live.

 

At that time, I saw one sister singing a song, she seemed so excited, I was shocked by her expression, and the song’s name is “So great of the Lord’s Grace”.  I asked why she had such a great joy, she said, “I believe in God”.  My interest was springing up again.  I went to church and wanted to search for more information.  First I went to a Catholic Church, what I saw was just religion, then I went to a Christian Church and I found the two are difference in essence.  I remember clearly that day.  I sat on the upstairs; and listened to the teaching  “The Vine and the Branches”.  When I heard, “if anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, and thrown into the fire and burned.”  I felt the Lord declared to me, I am the withered branch and I am going to hell.  I felt the Holy Spirit’s wrath come down to me, it is so terrible.  No, no, I don’t want to fall into hell.  After the teaching was over, when I went downstairs, I was dizzy.  Then I saw some Bibles that were put on the table, and I opened it and I read Genesis.  Suddenly, the Holy Spirit opened my eyes; I believed we were created by God. 

 

I was a bad smoker at that time, when I thought of God’s holiness and how dirty I am.  I decided to stop smoking and drinking alcohol.  At the third day after my decision, my addiction occurred and I felt there were hundreds and thousands of ants biting me.  I cried out; God, if you are true God, please help me?  The Lord knew my need.  From then on, I have no desire in smoking, just kept spitting phlegm.  On the ninth morning, when I go up, I suddenly found I was free from the bondage of smoking.  From then on the ashtray smells terrible and so did the alcohol. 

 

I was in the three-self church at the time, when I told my testimony, a pastor coming towards to me, he drunk so much alcohol like a drunkard.  I was shocked and became weak because of this; even nearly give up my belief. 

 

Thanks to God, one old man took me to his house and he led me to read the Bible, almost 20 days I was not touched until one day when we read Romans Chapter 13.  I was moved and knelt down and confessed.  Then in my home I learned to pray and every time when I pray I plead guilty.  The more I pray the more guilty I am as I remember even when I was a little boy I stole my grandma’s five cents.  I felt depressed and did not know when my confessing could be finished.  In 1993, one time when I attended a Bible study course, I understand the grace of the cross and the burden of sin was thrown down like an iron chain.  From then on wherever I go whatever person I met, I can’t help telling them my testimony and preach the Gospel. 

 

The Lord give me a special gift, and He is with me all the time and always I stood beside the gate of the church to preach the Gospel.  Sometimes there are nearly 200 persons listening.  This situation made the three-self church pay attention.  There leaders had a meeting first and then they sent two pastors to me and told me, “You haven’t a certificate to preach and you haven’t gone to seminary so what you are teaching is like a blind person who guides the blind person.”  They forced me to stop preaching the Gospel.  For me I have read the Bible three times and my favorite book is Romans.  My Bible was worn out because I read it all the time.  It is like honey to me.  I always pray in tears until deep into the night.  My family said that I was crazy.  But no nothing can stop my love for God.  I said to the pastors; “it was God who loved me first and I have no desire for fame and gain.  As a result they refused me to enter the church, thus we begin our gathering in my home.

 

One day, when I read Genesis, God called Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.”  The Holy Spirit said to me that I should leave my company.  I must resist many temptations before I leave the company.  The Lord helped and guide me and I put all that I have behind me and left. 

 

There are many trains in the ministry, just as the scripture said, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).  I have fear of jail, one time when we were gathering in an area, I was arrested by the police, they thrown me into prison for one whole night, after that, my fear was reduced.  I can’t endure mosquito bites at first, but in the countries, there always have mosquitoes.  One day, when I was in a mountain area, I was praying and in a short time, there have already more than one hundred warts in my skin. Then I know what’s the meaning of devoting oneself, with my hard work.  I even can’t defeat one small mosquito, how paltry our human being! Thanks to the Lord, from then on, when the mosquitoes attack me, no such pain any more.

 

In March 1995, for the need of the church, with brothers and sisters praying, God call me to be a full-time worker.  I read in the bible that Gideon uses a wool fleece to test, so I thought: “God, please send ten persons who will bring me 800 RMB in three days.”  I thought it’s impossible, and forgot my prayer the next day.  On the morning of the third day, one preacher was going to preach, many brothers and sisters came to my house and said:” the Lord inspired us that you are in need of money.”  Then I remembered my prayer, praise God, how wonderful He is!  After that, there were many problems in my work, because of my fault, a big loss to my company.  One night when I was praying, God’s love filled with me strongly, I saw God’s call, and decided to put my full time in His ministry, although my salary was very high at that time.

 

I married my wife in 1997, from 1998, the persecution came, most of my co-workers were arrested, and eventually the majority of the ministry left, only my wife and myself was arrested too. I could do nothing just kept on praying, felt so lonely.  Many old brothers and sisters giving offering and praying and visiting the suffering family.

 

My wife had ever been arrested in Henan province, she was beaten badly by the police, almost half of her body couldn’t move, the church kept praying for her.  She told the prisoners Gospel when she was in jail for two months, at last, they found nothing from her, and with the Holy Spirit’s work, on the last day of the two months, they threw her out of the jail, and said, “go to look your Christians.”  She lay on the ground for nearly half an hour, couldn’t move.  She prayed and prayed, and then she was able to stand up, then to walk later.  She met a Christian; the person helped her to get a ticket from Hennan to our home in other province.

 

We had built an old people’s home in March 2000.  The offering came from some brothers and sisters, there are about forty old brothers and sisters there, they’d like to use the home as a place for pray. However, in March 2001, fifty policeman came, they forced the old men and women to leave here, of course the old people would not leave, so the drug them out, and then destroyed the building (include all the equipment in it), for they said that this building has a Christianity background.  Some of the old persons had taken all they have in building the home, so they now have nothing, had to live in some kind brothers and sisters’ house, four of them are homeless. Even the local resident felt this was unjust; they crashed the glass of the police car, and beat two of the destroying policeman.

 

Always we must pay ransom for the brothers and sisters who were arrested. Then some of the brothers and sisters received from God, we began to unite the other province not pay the ransom, (the churches connected by an old brother who had been in prison for seven years for the Gospel).  In 1997, about ten of our brothers and sisters were arrested, but they obey God’s word, refused to pay the ransom.  Thanks to God, none of them stayed in the prison a long time.

 

Because we refuse to pay the ransom, there are more cruel torture for us, for me, I have been arrested for twelve times, the Lord continued to guide me and protect me. We move frequently from here to there, as Paul said in the Scripture: they went about in sheepskins and goatskins.  Until December 1999, the police broke into my house, took away all that we have, at the same time, the other seven or eight leaders were arrested, their property were confiscated too. The Lord use His way took my wife and I to another city when the things happened, but we had nothing, we stood in the station, there were only five cents in my pocket, even not enough to take a public bus. God is so wonderful; He knows us and meets our need at any time. When we didn’t know what should we do, a brother learned our need; he gave us 1800 RMB, (later I know, these offering were given by the free church in western through a brother whose name is Jon Dee.)  Praise the Lord; it is His love that connects all the brothers and sisters in the world.

 

In the last past several months, the police declared clearly: “forbid anyone to have meeting personally, once be found, they will be arrested and fined” because of FaLun Gong cult.  There are three persons in prison, but thanks to the Lord, their time in prison is not very long, in general, not less than three months. I believe this is the Lord’s protection.

 

When we were captured, we were persecuted; we did feel Christ’s presence and love. When we were in prison, we saw the great love from Christ to show on the prisoner, He healed them, listening their prayer.  Our God is so wonderful!

 

I had thought and expected to build our church into the biggest church in our area. When I was arrested in prison in 1998, I couldn’t bear the torture, when I vomited blood, I know human being’s weakness, and thought that the Lord will take me to heaven.  Later when I was praying, the Lord said to me, “it was my sheep, not yours.”  Then I understood and said to God,  “Lord, let me only do your work.”

 

From these years in ministry, I found it’s not I give to others, but I received so abundant love from God and our brothers and sisters.  I give thanks to the Lord from deep in my heart.

                            

REGION #6

 

Another leader came to us that I had not met before, his name is Titus.  The week that we were in China was their labor holiday.  Most trains are packed with travelers and many are not able to get on.  Titus found himself in a long line that meant he would miss the train to meet us.  So he jumped up and climbed into the window and got a seat.  He brings these reports to us. 

 

In his network, there are 3 in prison and 10 leaders on the run.  Last year in May, he was arrested in a city far from home.  He prayed to the Lord, please don’t let them find my bag with all the phone numbers of leaders and other information.  He convinced the police he was innocent and they let him go.  His bag was found by Christians and returned to him. 

 

A JUDAS ELDER

 

In his network, 100 saints gathered for worship.  An elder friend from the government church (TSPM) reported the event to the police.  In the past he had been a co-worker but became a Judas.  He became jealous because many from his church were leaving and going to the underground house churches where the worship is free and there is a powerful presence of the Lord.  This action by the police was like a premeditated sting operation.  They entered quietly without any one noticing.   They came prepared to video the worship, which they did, and presented it as evidence that they are a cult.

 

All were released except the 3 leaders.  The two men were sentenced to 1 year and the woman leader was sentenced to two years in prison.  They have been beaten severely especially the woman.  They beat her in the face so hard that it had swollen into a square shape.  The next day the Lord healed her and her face returned to normal.  They have been charged as a cult and now have appealed the verdict to a higher court.  This is the first time that any Christian in China has done this.  The situation is uncharted territory and requires the prayers of the Free Church.  It may mean more suffering before a victory comes.  They are prepared.  A victory in heaven from our prayers means a victory on earth.  You have to admire their courage in doing this.  We contributed to the three families.

 

The leaders from the government church must swear allegiance to the Communist Party.  The Lord says, “You must have no other gods before me.”  It is very sad to see former brothers in the Lord now committed to the government church.  Yielding to temptation, they turn in their house church brothers to the police, knowing they will be tortured and sent to prison.  We passed by an old church that had become a government (Three Self Patriot Movement) church.  On the flag pole at the entrance to the church was flying the Communist government flag.  Many churches and missions in the US support these government churches and thereby add to the bogus claim that “China has freedom of religion”.   

 

Titus quoted the scripture to us found in Proverbs 25:26, “Like a muddied spring or a polluted well is a righteous man who gives way to the wicked.”

 

YOUR PRAYERS SAVED 200 MISSIONARIES FROM ARREST

 

I had been scheduled to speak at a missionary gathering in this same region.  We felt encouraged to cancel my appearance because of the tension between our two countries.  The gathering went on without me but my Chinese co-worker went as a guest speaker.

 

During the second day of meetings, the police came to arrest the Christians.  They searched the first floor of the facility and did not find them.  About 200 were upstairs quietly praying that the police would not come up.  The police asked to search the second floor.  The owner told them that the one that lives there had the key and was not there now.  Uncharacteristically, the police left.  I believe your prayers covering me and my co-workers overflowed and protected them.  Thank you for your prayers and thank the Lord for His faithfulness to protect his children.

 

EQUIPPING THE SAINTS

 

I know the Lord is expanding our areas of assistance.  We met the needs of the suffering Christians that we were aware of and still found ourselves with money left over.  The only other need was to assist these leaders with the resources they needed to spread the true Gospel. 

 

I was surprised to hear Titus explain the use of hi-tech equipment in their ministry.  In China, they use CDV’s like we use VCR’s.  They video teachings and burn it into a CD and distribute them to the house churches.  They view the worship and teaching on their TV set.  This allows house churches to view the teachings in small groups, which lowers the risk of arrest.  I have been encouraging them to reduce the size of their house churches so if discovered, there will be less damage to families.  It is also much safer to store a CD than a foreign teacher.  They are desperate for support in this ministry.  The workers need training to reach the massive harvest in China.  Titus came to meet us expecting nothing and left with a blessing from you.

 

A CRIPPLED PRISONER – A TESTIMONY

 

I know an old brother, one of his hands has deformity, and his leg is lame.  He was arrested when he was baptizing the others.  In the prison, they were forced to do the hard labor work; his work is to carry mud.  It is so heavy that his shoulder was broken to blood by the burden, flesh and blood were mixed together, you can’t tell the difference.  The prisoners are forced to run fast with the load when they carry the load, or else they will be beaten if they run slow.  Every time when he was going to work, he would pray first, and then there is no pain any more.  Although he can’t run (for his leg is lame), the Lord protected him, and he never was beaten.

 

Sometimes they were forced to pick tea on the mountain, in the north of China.  There are always heavy rains there.  Everybody must finish their quota otherwise they will be punished severely.  They told him: “since you are disabled, you don’t need to go to do this work.”   He prayed to God: “God, please help me, and let me do this work to glorify your Name.”  As a result, every time he uses one hand he takes the most tea.  Glory to God.

 

Another brother was thrown into prison for his faith.  They poured the freezing water on his body in the cold winter.  When he couldn’t endure it, he prayed to God.  It’s so wonderful, the next time, it was his turn, something was wrong with the tap, and there was no water any more!

JON DEE REPORT

 

A REUNION AFTER 48 YEARS

 

An 83-year-old Chinese born Christian Brother, we will call Moses, hosted our stay in China.  At risk and inconvenience to himself, he made his apartment available to us.  His age did not hinder his ministry of teaching the Gospel.  Twice, while we were there, he was accompanied by two women who took him to underground house churches to teach about his Lord Jesus. 

 

A brother named Silas, who had not seen him in 48 years, came to visit him.  They attended the same church in Taiwan.  During there conversation, Moses remembered Silas as a young preacher that lived in deep poverty.  He would preach with his shoes open in the front and his knees showing through his pants.  His shirt was torn as well.  Moses anonymously sent him money and material for a suit that was to be tailored for him.  The moment came and Silas realized who the generous person was who had done this for him.  “You’re the one”, said Silas, rejoicing for finally finding out after 48 years.

 

Now 73, Silas has been to China countless times on business while doing Christian activities.  He is a well-known professor at a distinguished university.  He took the time to coach us on security.  We needed his wisdom and advice to keep this mission as low key and invisible as possible.   It was interesting to learn of all the levels of bureaucracy and security in China.  Communism is a recent adopted form of government but the method of governing by fear is their ancient historical way.

 

An elderly couple looked after us during our stay in this apartment.  Every morning, I made the lady a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We learned she loved Kentucky Fried Chicken.  So near the end of our stay, we treated her and her daughter to a dinner there.  Then we learned they planned a dinner for us on our last night there.  They labored a long time and cooked us 14 different Chinese dishes, which goes beyond the outer fringe of hospitality.  Ten of us enjoyed this meal that was worthy of royalty.

If you have read down this far you have a sincere interest in the Lord’s suffering church.  It is exciting for me to see more and more Christians in the Free Church, that are making room in their busy life to include ministering to the Lord’s suffering church.  I encourage you not to fall short of the responsibility that He places on your heart either in prayer, support or deed.  In the book of James it says, “Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.  If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?  In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

 

PCC is a mission promoted by the Spirit of the Lord and spread by word of mouth.  Please consider sending this report to your friends in the Lord.  All of your offerings go to China, as we are an all-volunteer staff and we pay our own expenses.  Until next time.
